New passport rules in Germany in 2024
Jan 19, 2024It finally happened: Germany made it easier to obtain the citizenship.
A bill to modernize citizenship law (20/9044) was adopted on Friday, 19 January 2024.
What has changed:
1. Multiple citizenship is to be generally accepted in the case of naturalization, meaning - you can keep your first passport when applying for a German citizenship.
2. Applying for passport will be possible after a stay of 5 years (instead of 8 years previously), and ...
3. ...and even after 3 years in the case of special integration achievements - for example, excellent knowledge of German, volunteer experience or strong professional achievements.
As this sounds vague, more to be followed with news on https://www.bundestag.de/
4. The period of residence of one parent in Germany required for a child of foreign parents to automatically acquire German citizenship by birth in Germany will also be reduced from 8 to 5 years.
This and combined effort of improved Blue Card (https://learn.conexao.io/blog/bluecardgermany2024) makes it the best time to move to Germany.
