Italy's Digital Nomad Visa in 2024
Apr 18, 2024Considering a move to Italy in 2024? The country’s new digital nomad visa might be your ticket to making that dream come true.
Italy, a top vacation spot, is now attracting digital nomads—people who work remotely and move from one location to another.
Previously, digital nomads had no legal means to reside and work in Italy for extended periods.
The Italian government introduced a visa specifically for remote workers on March 28, 2022, and it became active on April 4, 2024.
Main points:
NO LIMIT on permits issued annually 🔥
- Non-EU highly qualified workers: freelancers AND employees
- Salary requirement: 28000 EUR/year and higher
- Valid: for 1 year and can be renewed
Now, let’s dive deeper.
Requirements:
1. Who is eligible: highly-skilled workers - a freelancer or an employee on the payroll of a business based anywhere in the world.
The requirements are almost identical for the two categories, with a few exceptions (more on that below).
2. Skills and education: applicants must prove they have a university or college degree (minimum 3 years) from an accredited institution, an accredited professional license, or accredited superior professional experience.
3. Work experience: applicants must document at least six months of experience in the industry in which they intend to work remotely.
If no university degree, then up to 5 years of experience is required.
4. Work contract (for employees) and evidence of contracts between the freelancer and their clients.
5. Criminal background: not necessarily, but it’s possible that some Consulates might ask for the applicant’s background check.
6. Annual income: a proof of annual income of EUR 28,000 or more.
7. Housing: applicants must provide evidence of a place to stay in Italy such as, property purchase contract, or lease agreement.
8. Health insurance: The Italian government provides a universal healthcare system that covers Italian residents, regardless of nationality.
However, Italian Digital Nomad Visa applicants must provide evidence that they have coverage of medical treatment and hospitalization for the duration of stay, in the form of medical insurance or by signing up with the Italian National Health Service (EUR 2,000 per year).
A private medical insurance usually costs EUR 350-EUR 700 per year.
9. Digital nomad visa duration: The digital nomad and remote worker visa is valid for one year.
After that, you can renew your immigration permit.
10. Where to apply for an Italian digital nomad visa: at the Italian Consulate which is competent for the geographical area where you have your home (residency).
