Blue Card Revisions in Germany 2023: A Closer Look
Oct 29, 2023If you ever considered moving to Germany - keep reading.
It's 2023 and the demand for tech workers in Europe is at its highest.
Portugal is attracting talent through their nomad program, Spain is on the rise with the similar offer. Now it's time for Germany.
Shortage of skilled workers in Germany actually reached an all-time high this year - in July this year, 49.7 percent of companies reported to be affected.
This year, Germany made big changes to its Blue Card regulations in 2023 to attract professionals from outside the EU.
I distilled the most important ones:
Reduced Salary Thresholds:
- Prior to November 18, 2023, a minimum gross salary of €58,400 per annum was required to be eligible for a Blue Card in Germany.
- Post November 18, 2023, this threshold has been lowered substantially to €43,800 per annum, making the Blue Card more accessible.
Legislative Adjustments:
- August 16, 2023: Act on the Further Development of Skilled Immigration rolled out, paving the path for lowered Blue Card salary thresholds.
- The Cabinet approved a new legislative proposal from the Interior and Labor Ministries to change immigration laws, driven by the necessity to fill the skilled labor gap.
Implementation Phases:
- The first phase of these immigration rule changes began in November 2023, as part of Germany's broader initiative to enhance the attraction for skilled workers from non-EU countries.
Implications:
- These amendments signify Germany's proactive approach to addressing its skilled labor shortage.
- By making the Blue Card more accessible, Germany aims to attract a broader spectrum of skilled professionals, facilitating a smoother immigration process for qualified individuals seeking employment opportunities in the country.
Germany's tweaking its Blue Card rules, a smart move in the global talent chessboard. A lower salary bar and legislative shifts are the highlights.
The aim? Pull in more skilled players, fill the labor gap, keep the economy on a robust track.
